Course Syllabus
Course Code COE14L
Course Title Switching Theory and Logic Circuits (laboratory)
Course Description
Laboratory
Introduces basic computer electronics to the students to enable them to analyze and construct electronic circuits that physically implements Boolean algebraic expressions using digital integrated circuits ICs 74LLXXX series. Implement the use of Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) ICs in laboratory experiments project designs and constructions.
Course Goal To buildup the student’s abilities to build minicomputer hardware from mathematical models (Boolean expression) using Transistor-Transistor Logic Integrated Circuits (TTL) ICs.
Definition of Minicomputer Any sequential electronic device that can perform electronic data processing, data transfer and control logic operations
A minicomputer should posses:
1. At least one Arithmetic/Logic Operations i.e. increment INC (counters)
2. Data transfer Operations from register to another through the same Data bus
3. Control Logic Operations register pointer, chip enable selects or sequence decoder
Course General Objectives Upon completion of the course the student must be able to:
1. Design and construct electronic circuits that physically implement Boolean expression using 74LLXXX
2. Build Monitor, Debug, de-bounced/skewed input switches and Signal or Oscillator source circuits using 7404
3. Build combinational logic circuits that physically implements arithmetic logic operations using basic Logic ICs 7408, 7432, 7404 and 7486
4. Build combinational logic circuits that physically implementing decoding/encoding functions 7-LED Segment driver, Multiplexer and De-multiplexing (chip enable select) Logic ICs 7408, 7432, 7404 and 7486
5. Build combinational logic circuits that physically implements three state de-multiplexing (register/memory data out select) using 7432 & 4148 or 74125
6. Build sequential logic circuits that physically implementing data processing and data transfer operations using 74373 Transparent Latch or similar
